By Dr. Harshana Niriella, BAMS — Ayurvedic Physician
Somewhere between a third Google search about why you are always cold, always inflamed, or always tired in ways that blood tests cannot explain, you may have encountered the word dosha — and then, almost certainly, a quiz.
Dosha quizzes are everywhere in the Ayurvedic corner of the internet. Some are thoughtful, most are superficial. What is far less common is a clear, clinician-written explanation of what a dosha quiz actually measures, how accurate it can reasonably be, what to do with the result, and where the limits of a quiz end and a proper clinical assessment begins.
This article covers all of that. I am a BAMS-qualified Ayurvedic physician, and the quiz at /quiz reflects the actual diagnostic criteria I use in practice — not a wellness blog's approximation of them.

What a Dosha Quiz Actually Measures
A dosha quiz is a structured self-assessment designed to identify your dominant Ayurvedic body type. In Ayurvedic medicine, a dosha is one of three fundamental biological energies — Vata (air + space), Pitta (fire + water), and Kapha (earth + water). Every person is born with a unique combination of all three, called the prakriti or birth constitution.
Your prakriti determines your natural physical build, mental tendencies, digestive patterns, stress response, and your specific vulnerabilities to imbalance. It is, in the most literal sense, the operating system your body runs on.
A well-built quiz asks you questions across three categories:
| Category | What it assesses | Clinical value |
|---|---|---|
| Physical traits | Frame, skin, hair, eyes, heat/cold tolerance | High — these are stable, constitutional markers |
| Mind & emotion | Decision style, sleep, stress response | Medium — reflects both prakriti and current state |
| Digestion & metabolism | Appetite, regularity, energy across the day | High — most clinically useful indicator |
The quiz totals your answers across Vata, Pitta and Kapha and identifies which dosha is most represented — your dominant type, and (in a good quiz) your secondary one as well.

How Accurate Is an Online Dosha Quiz?
This deserves an honest, clinician-level answer.
A well-constructed dosha quiz, based on classical Ayurvedic criteria, is meaningfully accurate as a screening tool. It is reliable enough to give you a useful starting point for dietary and lifestyle changes, and accurate enough that most patients who take a good quiz and then undergo a formal clinical assessment find the results broadly aligned.
Its limitations fall into three honest categories:
- Self-report bias. A quiz can only see what you consciously know about yourself. Many people have adapted so thoroughly to their imbalance that they no longer recognise it as unusual — the person who has had cold hands since childhood may not flag it.
- Prakriti vs. vikriti. A good quiz asks about lifelong tendencies, but most people answer based on how they feel right now. Ayurveda distinguishes between prakriti (your constitutional baseline) and vikriti (your current state of imbalance). A quiz cannot reliably separate them at the same time.
- Dual-doshic complexity. Most people are dual-doshic. When two doshas score close, the appropriate diet and lifestyle nuance becomes significantly more nuanced — and which dosha to prioritise shifts by season, age, and current concern.
With those caveats clearly stated: as an entry point into Ayurveda, a well-built dosha quiz is a genuinely useful tool.

What to Do After You Know Your Dosha
Your dosha result is not a label — it is a starting point. Here is where to go next based on your result.
If You Are Vata-Dominant
Vata's primary needs are warmth, regularity, nourishment, and oil. The most impactful changes for a Vata type are almost always in meal timing (consistent times), food temperature (warm and cooked over raw and cold), and fats (ghee and sesame oil added to daily meals).
A predictable daily routine does more for Vata balance than any single dietary change.

If You Are Pitta-Dominant
Pitta's primary needs are cooling, moderation, and boundaries — in food, in work, and in emotional expression. The most impactful changes for a Pitta type are reducing heat (spicy food, alcohol, direct sun) and building in genuine rest, rather than scheduling rest as one more item to optimise.
Pitta types often resist the idea that they need to slow down — which is precisely why slowing down is the medicine.

If You Are Kapha-Dominant
Kapha's primary needs are stimulation, lightness, and movement. The most impactful changes for a Kapha type are reducing heavy food (dairy, wheat, sugar, fried food) and establishing vigorous morning exercise before breakfast.
Kapha types have the highest physical resilience of the three doshas and typically see the most dramatic results when they implement genuine change.

When the Quiz Is Not Enough
A dosha quiz is a door. For many people, it — along with the diet guide that follows — is a complete and sufficient starting point. For others, a quiz is only where the journey begins.
You are likely in this second group if:
- You score closely across two doshas, and need clinical judgement on which to prioritise.
- You have a specific health concern driving your interest — digestive disorders, chronic inflammation, skin conditions, hormonal imbalance, insomnia, anxiety, or unexplained fatigue.
- You have tried dietary changes based on your dosha result and hit a plateau.
- You want to explore Panchakarma, Rasayana, or other classical Ayurvedic therapies, which should always be physician-supervised.
In any of these cases, an online consultation with a qualified BAMS physician is the appropriate next step.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is my dosha?
Your dosha is your Ayurvedic body type — the unique combination of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha that determines your natural tendencies in digestion, temperament, build, stress response, and susceptibility to imbalance. Most people have one dominant and one secondary dosha. The only reliable way to find yours is to take the quiz.
How accurate is an online dosha quiz?
A well-designed quiz is a reliable screening tool — accurate enough to give a meaningful starting point. A formal assessment by a qualified BAMS physician using pulse diagnosis (nadi pariksha), tongue examination, and clinical case-taking provides a more complete picture. The quiz is the door; a consultation is what lies behind it.
Can I have two doshas?
Yes — most people are dual-doshic. The three most common combinations are Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha, and Vata-Kapha. A dual-doshic result needs more nuanced guidance than a single-dosha protocol.
Do I need to give my email to take this quiz?
No. The quiz at /quiz is completely free, requires no email, no account, and no signup of any kind. Your result is displayed immediately on screen.
Is this dosha quiz based on real Ayurveda?
Yes. The questions are based on classical Ayurvedic assessment criteria drawn from the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam, the foundational texts of Ayurvedic medicine, and were developed by a BAMS-qualified physician.

Summary
A dosha quiz is the fastest, most accessible entry point into Ayurvedic medicine. Three minutes, no prior knowledge required, an immediate framework for understanding why your body works the way it does.
Its limits are real — but as a starting point, used correctly, it is exactly what it is designed to be: a door into a system of medicine that takes individual difference seriously.
