Kapha dosha is the energy of structure, lubrication and stability. When Kapha is balanced you are calm, strong, loving, patient and have excellent stamina. When Kapha goes out of balance, you may feel heavy, lethargic, congested, gain weight easily, oversleep, or struggle with sinus issues and water retention.
Kapha is heavy, cold, oily, slow and stable. To balance Kapha, choose foods and habits that are light, warm, dry and stimulating.
Best tastes for Kapha: pungent, bitter and astringent. Reduce: sweet, sour and salty.
Kapha-friendly foods
Grains: barley, millet, buckwheat, quinoa, dry-roasted oats, small amounts of basmati rice. Avoid wheat in excess. Vegetables: most vegetables are excellent — leafy greens, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, bitter gourd, celery, asparagus, mushrooms, radish, sprouts, peppers, onions, garlic. Cook with spices. Fruits: apples, pears, pomegranate, cranberries, berries, dried figs, dried apricots. Avoid bananas, dates, coconut, avocado, watermelon. Proteins: mung dal, red lentils, chickpeas (sprouted), small portions of chicken, freshwater fish, egg whites. Dairy: small amounts of low-fat buttermilk and goat milk. Avoid cheese, ice cream, heavy cream, and cold milk. Fats: tiny amount of ghee, mustard oil, corn oil. Kapha needs the least fat of all doshas. Spices: ginger, black pepper, long pepper, cinnamon, clove, turmeric, mustard seed, cumin, fenugreek, chili in moderation. Spices are medicine for Kapha. Sweeteners: raw honey (never heated) is the only sweetener Kapha truly benefits from. Use sparingly.
Foods to avoid or reduce
Dairy (especially cold milk and ice cream), wheat, bread, pasta, deep-fried foods, sugar, sweet desserts, bananas, dates, coconut, nuts (especially cashews), red meat, cold drinks, iced water, fizzy drinks, leftovers, and any food eaten late at night. Skipping breakfast is actually good for Kapha — they wake up still digesting last night's dinner.
A simple Kapha daily routine
5:30 am: Wake up. Kapha must rise before 6 am or they feel heavy all day. 6:00 am: Vigorous exercise — brisk walk, jogging, dynamic yoga, cycling. Aim for 45–60 minutes, work up a sweat. 7:30 am: Warm water with lemon, ginger and a teaspoon of raw honey (stir in after the water cools to drinkable temperature). 9:00 am: Light breakfast — stewed apple with cinnamon, or skip breakfast entirely. 12:30 pm: Main meal — barley or millet with a cooked green vegetable curry well-spiced with ginger, mustard seed and black pepper, plus a small mung dal. 4:00 pm: Ginger tea or tulsi tea. Avoid afternoon naps — they aggravate Kapha. 6:30 pm: Light dinner — vegetable soup with lots of pepper, or steamed vegetables with quinoa. Eat lightly. 10:00 pm: In bed. Kapha does best with 6–7 hours of sleep, not more.
